Contest News is on the "News" page, along with other timely items. The year 2010 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, and, of course, the corresponding National Jamboree.
The leadership of nine Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula Councils met late
last year to discuss how we could be a part of this grand event and to support
the class of youth that miss out on the 2010 Jamboree (as a youth) due to
shifting it to Scouting’s anniversary. All
nine councils agreed to hold a regional event worthy of this “once in a
lifetime” anniversary. Hence, the
Great Lakes Centennial Jamboree was born! Scheduled
for September of 2009, the event has two main goals:
Ř
Celebrate 100 years of Scouting
in Ř
Provide our youth with an
opportunity on par with the 2010 National Jamboree
What Is It?Targeted
at Scout Troops and Venture
Crews from Troops
will be housed in subcamps using
their own tents, similar to the National Jamboree. Friday
evening will allow time to get set up and attend events within each subcamp. Each
Scout can choose their own pace for Saturday’s daytime events, although some
special opportunities will be offered in limited quantities at specified times. Action areas will be duplicated in multiple locations,
to reduce distances traveled by Scouts. Favorites
include archery, rifle, fishing, and biking. The
Adventure area will include
government, military, public group (e.g., hunting, fishing, retrievers) and
commercial displays and hands-on activities. The
Midway will feature a variety of
Merit Badges that are challenging, but often unavailable in a troop setting.
Religious
services will be offered, as a Scouts-Own and by several denominations. The
Saturday evening show will include a
headliner, some scouts (YOUR OA Lodge?), hot air, and flying things (possibly
launched). Sunday
morning will be a time to pack up, but not too early.
Some program events may be only offered on Sunday morning. ![]() |
