NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Waiver

The year 2010 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, and, of course, the corresponding National Jamboree.  The leadership of eight Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan Upper Peninsula Councils met starting in 2006 to discuss how we could be a part of this grand event and to support the class of youth that miss out on the 2010 Jamboree (as a youth) due to shifting it to match Scouting’s anniversary.  The councils agreed to hold a regional event worthy of this “once in a lifetime” anniversary.  Hence, the Great Lakes Centennial Jamboree was born!  More Councils have signed on as the planning has progressed.  The event has two main goals:

Ř       Celebrate 100 years of Scouting in America

Ř       Provide our youth with an opportunity on par with the 2010 National Jamboree

Who: All registered Boy Scouts, Venturers and Webelos.

What: A Jamboree style event for over 7000 participants, sponsored by 12 Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan councils.

When: September 25 - 27, 2009

Where: Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Grounds, in Oshkosh, WI.

Cost: $45.  Unit registration closed AUGUST 31st!
This includes a commemorative patch, Saturday's lunch, and access to all the age-appropriate events.  EAA Airventure Museum admission is not included, but participants will get a reduced-price if they want to experience the Museum as well. 'Young Eagles' participation is still being negotiated.

* Youth members in this category will receive access to age appropriate activities.

# The reference in a council e-mail about lunches is to Saturday Day guests – youth that paid to have full access to all activities.   We originally did not include the box lunch for Saturday Day Visitors (youth), but in retrospect thought we could provide it.  Again this is for youth that are coming only for the day and paying the full activities fees by September 1st.  There is no reason for an adult to pay the full activity fee for Saturday and hence no box lunch for them.   It’s just not covered in their $10 fee day fee.

What about Medical Forms?

The GLCJ participants need a valid medical form for events under 72 hours in duration.  This includes up-to-date medical history and information, current medications and immunizations, appropriately signed (including parent, if under 18).  No physical exam signature required.

If it's the old form, we need the Class 1 and Class 2 sections completely filled out, with an over-18 signature in the last 12 months.

If it's the new Medical Form, a complete Part A and Part C must be submitted, all appropriately signed.

We'd like the physical exam (Old: Class 3; new, Part B), if it's been completed, but it's not mandatory.

What Is It?

Targeted at Scout troops and Venturing crews from Wisconsin, northern Illinois, upper Michigan, and surrounding states. Webelos can attend as guests of their local Scout Troops and some age-appropriate events will be included for Webelos. Venturers and older Scouts will also get a set of activities tailored to their interests.   Here's a map of the grounds, and major activities.

Troops and Crews will be housed in subcamps using their own tents, similar to the National Jamboree.

Friday evening will allow time to get set up and attend events within each subcamp.

Each Scout can choose their own pace for Saturday’s daytime events, although some special opportunities will be offered in limited quantities at specified times. Subject to change, here's a taste of what's planned:

The Midway will feature a variety of Merit Badges that are challenging, but often unavailable in a troop setting.
See the new Merit Badge FAQ page for details.

Youth-built Pumpkin Chuckin' (and trebuchet) will showcase the accuracy of launched vegetables. Here are the rules for troop-built designs. A pre-built device will be available for those that would simply like to try this out.  For consistency (and EAA doesn't want to sell vegetables next year), the "pumpkin" is a juice-can sized slug of concrete, and the target is a castle wall of five-gallon pails.

Action areas will be duplicated in multiple locations, to reduce distances traveled by Scouts. Many contests and puzzles tied to regional activities, both traditional and goofy.  Favorites include cheese rolling, disabilities awareness, and bmx biking. Guitar Hero has been confirmed, with the championship on stage Saturday evening.

The Adventure area is designed for all participants and will include some aircraft, government, military, public group (e.g., hunting, fishing, raptors, retrievers). There is space for commercial displays and hands-on activities, plus mountain biking.  Bring your GPS, and compete against that low-power favorite, the spirit compass. Try your hand at leave no trace.   We're working with area re-enactors to stage some period-accurate events and others that are inaccurate but just plain fun.

The Extreme area will focus on age-appropriate activities for older Scouts and Venturers, like high COPE and climbing, and advanced-skill shooting (black powder and pistol).

Venturers will have their own hang-out, and the ability to learn more about, and work on, the Venturing advancement awards. This program is being led by a team of Venturing youth leaders from across the target councils.

Religious services will be offered, as an interfaith and by several denominations (Catholic, Protestant, Methodist, and Church of Christ are confirmed).

The Saturday evening show will include a regionally-recognized headliner... The Dweebs... guaranteed to keep the crowd on their feet with popular music.  It'll feature some old Scouters, history and stories, Scouts, capped off by a bunch, maybe even two bunches, of fireworks.

Sunday morning will be a time to pack up, but not too early.  Some program events may be only offered on Sunday morning.

Patch trading? ...Yah, sure!  Same rules as at National Jamboree... Adults can trade with adults, youth trade with youth, but not adults with youth.  It is expected that patches will be traded 1-for-1 and same-for-same.

Our challenge was to provide more activities than you can do in a day, and we're well on our way to doing just that.  It'll be a celebration of where we've come from, and where we're going.

Giving Back...  Scouts, Scouters, and parents visiting the GLCJ are asked to help us celebrate our Centennial while giving back to the community on Saturday, 9/26:
BLOOD DRIVE... 100 units of blood. Those 17 and over (or 16, with parental consent) can donate blood on-site through the Community Blood Center, Appleton.  See www.save3lives.org for registration or the parental consent form.
FOOD DRIVE...  100 totes of food. As everyone prepares to march into the arena show, please donate a non-perishable food item to help the Fox Valley food shelves.  Please watch for outdated food items, though.

How do I sign up?

Troop leaders and crew advisors will receive registration particulars from their council on the online registration process.

Youth should start asking their troop leaders or venturing crew advisors, and other scouts, about participating.  Webelos, ask your Den Leader to contact the scout troop you'll move up to.

Adults coming with their unit (Troop or Crew), would register through their unit, at the participant price.

Adults interested in serving on the staff of the Great Lakes Centennial Jamboree, but aren't in a unit that is attending, should contact their council's registration person for a specific assignment.

Order of the Arrow and Venturing members, both youth and adult, that aren't in a unit that is attending should contact their lodge about how to register as staff members. (Under Staff registration, there's an option to denote "OA" or "Venturing", which will be confirmed by that subcommittee.)

Can Cub Scouts and families attend?

Sure!  Cub Scouts, Webelos, and scouting families are welcome to visit the event for the day for a $10 fee, and will have limited participation in the activities themselves. Meals will be available from on-site vendors or snacks at the Trading Post.  Cub Scouts can join us for the day, but cannot stay overnight.   (Webelos, keep reading...)

Just like the National Scout Jamboree, the content and activities are tailored to Boy Scouts but there's still nothing like the experience of wandering around and looking at all the activity, displays, attending a worship service (Catholic, Protestant, or non-denominational) and shows.

Important times on the Day Visitor Schedule:
* Saturday, Program areas open 9-3:30pm; Lunch (kiosks open to those that paid the full fee; vendors available for those that didn't) 11-1:30; Religious services, 4pm; Dinner (vendors available), 5pm; Stage show day visitor seating opens 7pm, Lights Out, Midnight.

Can Webelos attend?

Webelos are strongly encouraged to come to the Great Lakes Centennial Jamboree and may stay overnight by signing up with a sponsoring Boy Scout troop for the regular fee.  Webelos that stay overnight will have access to many of the activities as younger scouts (11-13 years old).

Can Venturers attend?

Definitely.  We didn't completely forget about those high-school and college age young men and women, although our plans are a bit more virtual than for the younger scouts. Registered Venturing crews will have their own age-appropriate activities, and opportunities to work on advancement that might not exist in their local unit.

Is family camping available?

Yes, there will be an area for families to camp either in RVs, campers, or tents.  The fee is $15 per site for the weekend, with entry passes extra.  Attendees must ALSO be registered as participants or staff to have full privileges.  (There's a special registration link for family camping.  Click here.) Pets are not allowed. Water dispensers will be available nearby but none of the family camping sites will have running water or power hookups, since we don't have use of the regular EAA RV area (Audrey's Park).

NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Waiver

As part of the Action Centers, the Green Bay Packers are hosting a Punt, Pass and Kick competition.  If a youth wants to continue on into their regional PP&K competitions, they MUST submit a parent-signed PPK Waiver form at the time of participation.

Without a signed waiver, they will still be able to participate, but won't be eligible to move up if they are a top GLCJ finisher.
